Vibeke Backer has been a professor of asthma since 2011.  In her daily work she is a research team leader of a pulmonary medicine group at the Center for Active Health, CFAS, at Rigshospitalet.  Until 2019, she was the initiator and leader of the research at the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Bispebjerg Hospital - a department that she helped to establish.

In her research career, Vibeke Backer has achieved remarkable results. For example, she and her former research department have helped to improve and target the treatment of the common disease’s asthma and COPD through the BREATHE project, which is a joint project for the Capital Region of Denmark and Scania.

Vibeke Backer has built up a national pulmonary medicine network for pharmacological industrial research, which was a model for NEXT, now Trial Nation, which is a national public-private partnership with one entrance to improve Denmark's opportunities for industry-based pharmacological research. She was the initiator of NIP asthma, now RKKP Database for Asthma in Denmark, where all Danish asthma patients are included to assess and improve the quality of asthma assessment and treatment. Here, Vibeke Backer is still chairman.

Vibeke Backer has diligently published scientific articles since 1981.  Her scientific publications from 2014 until current include over 140 articles.  She has supervised many PhD courses for pulmonologists, who are today are independent specialists in their fields.
